What IELTS Score Do You Need? University and Immigration

For undergraduate admission, the IELTS band a university asks for is usually between 5 and 6.5, depending on the university and the country. For immigration it depends on the country, the visa and the points you want to claim: Canada, Australia and the UK each publish their own rules, and the figures below come directly from their government pages, checked on 20 October 2026.

My score is below the required 6.5. What are my options?

You have four options. First, check the requirement again, including whether the band applies overall or to each skill. Second, if your full test was on computer and your centre offers it, use One Skill Retake within 60 days, though Canada does not accept it for Express Entry. Third, ask for an Enquiry on Results, where senior examiners re-mark your papers and the fee is refunded if your band changes. Fourth, sit the full test again after working on your weak skill.

For the fee and how to book here, see the IELTS in Lebanon guide.

University admission: usually 5 to 6.5

There is no single IELTS score for university. Each university sets its own minimum, and the same university can set different minimums for different programmes. For undergraduate admission, the usual range is 5 to 6.5 overall. Where you land in that range depends on the university, the country and sometimes the faculty.

Two Lebanese examples show the spread. According to its undergraduate admission page, Beirut Arab University lists IELTS 5.5 as an accepted alternative to its own English exam. According to its English proficiency page, the Lebanese American University lists IELTS 6.5. We go through each university in The EEE in Lebanon: how AUB, LAU and BAU test your English, because those universities can also ask for their own English entrance exam instead.

  • Read the programme page, not only the university page. Faculties can ask for more than the general minimum.
  • Check whether a minimum per skill applies. Some institutions require a minimum in each of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, not only an overall band.
  • Check how long a result is valid. Universities and immigration offices set their own limits on how old a result can be.
  • Confirm Academic or General Training. See our guide to which IELTS test you need: IELTS Academic or General Training?.

Is my target realistic in the time I have?

The honest question is not only “what score do I need” but “can I reach it before the deadline”. Our team advises whether a target score is realistic in the time available. As a rule, start preparing at least two months before the exam. Longer is better, especially if you have a gap to close.

We do not promise scores. What we can say is how the preparation works. Students practise section by section, solve full samples alone, and then work through one or two full practice tests with the teacher before a mock exam. Writing is marked individually, with feedback given as an estimate of the band, and speaking practice is done with the teacher acting as examiner.

Immigration to Canada

Canada measures language through Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB). The official page on language testing for Express Entry (canada.ca, page dated 16 October 2026) states that you must take the IELTS General Training option, and that IELTS One Skill Retake is not accepted for Express Entry. For the Federal Skilled Worker Program, first official language, it gives this equivalence between IELTS bands and CLB levels:

  • CLB 7: 6.0 in Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing (4 points per ability).
  • CLB 8: Speaking 6.5, Listening 7.5, Reading 6.5, Writing 6.5 (5 points per ability).
  • CLB 9: Speaking 7.0, Listening 8.0, Reading 7.0, Writing 7.0 (6 points per ability).
  • CLB 10 and above: Speaking 7.5 to 9.0, Listening 8.5 to 9.0, Reading 8.0 to 9.0, Writing 7.5 to 9.0 (6 points per ability).

For the second official language, the page says a CLB 5 or higher in all four abilities earns 4 points. It also lists separate IELTS tables for the Federal Skilled Trades Program and the Canadian Experience Class, so use the table for your stream. Notice that the Listening band needed for each CLB level is higher than the others. A strong overall band with one weak skill may still fall short.

Immigration to Australia

The Australian Department of Home Affairs groups English into levels. For tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, both IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training are on its approved list, and the level is set by your lowest component score. The department’s pages (competent, proficient, superior) give these IELTS minimums in each of the four components:

  • Competent English: at least 6 in listening, reading, writing and speaking.
  • Proficient English: at least 7 in each of the four.
  • Superior English: at least 8 in each of the four.

The department says you must show a result from the 3 years before your visa application, depending on the visa subclass, and that the test must take place in a secure testing centre. The levels required, and the points awarded for higher levels, vary by visa, so check the page of your specific visa subclass before you decide on a target.

Immigration to the UK

The UK government does not set one IELTS band for every route. It sets a level on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) scale, and you prove it in set ways. For the Skilled Worker visa, the GOV.UK page says you must prove you can read, write, speak and understand English to at least level B2. Someone who held the visa before 8 January 2026 and is extending or updating it needs B1. For the Student visa, the level is CEFR B2 for degree level or above, and B1 below degree level.

You can prove the level with a UK school qualification started under 18, a UK degree-level qualification taught in English, a non-UK degree taught in English with an Ecctis assessment code, or by passing a Secure English Language Test (SELT) from an approved provider. The pages we read do not name the IELTS bands that map to each CEFR level, so we do not quote any. Check the approved-test list for your visa and ask the test centre which IELTS version is a SELT.
